A Challenging but Spectacular Day: Ascent to Pukakasa Pass and Exploration of the Inca Quarries

Today will be the longest and most demanding day of the trek, but undoubtedly the most impressive part of the entire experience. We will start early with a comforting cup of hot coca tea or coffee. After breakfast, we will begin the uphill hike to Pukakasa Pass, at an altitude of 4,450 meters (14,599 feet). The hike will take approximately two and a half hours.

Upon reaching the top, we will take a well-deserved break and enjoy panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks of the Urubamba mountain range and the majestic Sacred Valley of the Incas. At this point, our guide will perform a traditional offering ceremony to the Apus (spirits of the mountains), providing us with a deeper connection to the region’s spirituality.

We will then continue walking for another hour to reach the site where a delicious lunch awaits us. After the lunch break, our efforts will be rewarded with exceptional views of the region.

Next, we will begin the descent toward the Inca Quarries, a site of great historical significance. Here, we will explore tombs and unfinished structures—likely left incomplete due to the disruption caused by the Conquest. We will also admire the intricate stonework, which reflects the remarkable skill of Inca architects.

Additionally, we will observe the ramps built by the Incas, several kilometers long, that were used to transport stone blocks to Ollantaytambo, where temples dedicated to the Sun God were built.

Finally, we will continue our descent to our campsite in the Ñawinpata area. This will be the perfect place to relax and enjoy exceptional views of the Sacred Valley, with the imposing Verónica Glacier (5,893 m / 19,334 feet) dominating the horizon. As night falls, we will settle into our eco-friendly geodesic domes to enjoy a comforting dinner, surrounded by the natural beauty of the region and the comfort of a well-equipped campsite.
